OLD BREWERY RAZED A well-known Nome landmark is
being torn down before it falls down.
The building is the old brewery in Nome a
structure that dates back to the earliest days of the
gold rush town.
It was the Nome Brewing and Bottling Works owned by
William Bennett and Henry Kerns, who marketed a brand of
beer called "Aksala," Alaska spelled backwards.
After the beer business died down, the plant
was used for bottling of soft drinks.
The last time it was used was in 1934 and 1935 by
Polet's Stores as a cold storage plant after the big
fire and until Polet's rebuilt with a modern plant. The
property is now owned by the U. S. Smelting Company.
Those interested in starting a Nome Museum are
attempting to obtain some of the old equipment for the
museum.
